WALL-SOLUTION MASS TRANSFER IN AGITATED VESSELS

Ahmed Hassan Mohamed El-Shazli;

Abstract

The object of the present work is to study the wall-solution mass transfer in agitated vessels of rectangular geometry agitated with pitched
450 turbine impeller, under different conditions of impeller rotation

speed, dimensions of the vessel, physical properties of the solution ( p, J..l.

and D), and the addition of(polyox WSR-301) drag reducing polymer.

The present work was conducted using an electrochemical technique which involves measuring the limiting current of the cathodic reduction of ferricyanide ions at the nickel plated copper wall of the agitated vessel.

The study revealed the following results:

1. Impeller rotation speed •increases the mass transfer coefficient according to the equation

(51)

2. The ratio between the impeller diameter (d) and the equivalent diameter of the vessel (de) affects the mass transfer coefficient according to the equation

Sh = a3 (d/de)l.54 (53)
