Abstract

Thyroidecton1y n1eans ren1oval of part or the whole of the thyroid gland, and is indicated in various lesions of the gland.

The safety of thyroidectomy has been enhanced by anaesthetic refinements and preoperative control of the thyroid disease , so permitting unhurried, precise surgery in euthyroid patients .

The technical problem in the thyroidectomy is an anatomic one.
This relates to the patient's ability to be comfortable ,

to speak, and to carry on his profession without embarrassn1ent or encumbrance .

Two irnpodant nerves of the larynx, the supenor laryngeal and the recurrent laryngeal nerves are intimately related to the thyroid gland along their courses to supply the laryngeal muscles and mucosa .

One or both of them could be injured during thyroidectomy leading to voice and I or airway syn1ptoms.
