Relation between Obesity and Maternal Hypothyroxenemia during Early Pregnancy

Abstract


hyroid dysfunction is the most common endocrinal disorder in females in reproductive age. Maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy has a lot of adeverse effects for both mother and fetus such as increased risk of abortion, anemia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, placental abruption and postpartum hemorrhage. Poor fetal neurocognitive development, increased incidence of premature birth, and neonatal respiratory distress.
Many studies had demonstrated that obesity could leads to hashimoto thyroid, others showed that there is no relation. The American thyroid association recommended screening of maternal thyroid function only in morbidly obese subjects however the evidence of that is week.
This study investigated the relation between obesity and autoimmune hypothyroidism in early pregnancy.
The study was conducted on 225 subjects and the subjects were divided into three groups’ normal weight, overweight and obese.
Obese subjects in our study tended to have a higher TSH level and a lower free T4 concentration compared to normal and overweight subjects. Also obese subjects showed increased prevelance of TPO and anti TG antibodies.
