Ahlam MOHAMED Abd Alla;

Abstract

DS is the most common congenital cause of severe mental retardation with an incidence at birth 1.3/1000. The current method of antenatal screening
. j

can be done by selecting wom.

en for a diagnostic amniocent. esis on the basis of
advanced age above 35-40 years.

To avoid the risk of amniocentesis, measurement of serum markers including AFP, Free Estriol and Fl3 hCG will improve the detection efficiency from 20-25% level with a single marker to 50-80% with multiple markers.

The success of such screening programs depends on intensive educational programs for persons undergoing such screening tests ..

This screening protocol raises many social, ethical, economical and psychological stigmata of carrying such a disease.

Biochemical screening for DS is well established in the 2"d trimester of
-:
pregnancy, but there is littleinformations available on its value in the l st

trimester. This study describes the preliminary results with biochemical

screening of DS in the 1st trimester of pregnancy in order to evaluate its efficacy.
