Public health hazard of antibiotic resistant bacteria isolated from poultry

Fatma Karam Abdel kader;

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the role of chickens in transmission of antibiotic-resistance Salmonella to the human food chain causing public health hazard.

A total number of 301 cloacal swab samples were collected from apparently healthy and diseased farm chickens in Cairo, Giza and El Qalyubia, governorates, Egypt. Bacteriological examination of the samples using conventional methods for isolation of Salmonella showed that the isolation rate was 3.4% (6 / 175) from healthy and 11.1% (14 / 126) from diseased chickens (having diarrhea). Serotyping of 20 Salmonella isolates using slide agglutination tests evidenced different serotypes including those with public health significance like Typhimurium, Kentucky, and Infantis.
