Patient safety is the absence of preventable harm to a patient during the process of health care and reduction of risk of unnecessary harm associated with health care to an acceptable minimum. It is a foundamental principle of quality in health care and should be given prime importance by the healthcare fraternity. (Rau, 2015).
Improving patient safety in operating room is an increasing priority for operating room team and hospitals as sentinel events can be catastrophic for patients, caregivers, and institutions to protect and minimize the damage to the patient while doing an invasive procedure in the operating room (Yaldez,et al., 2013).
The operating room nurses have an important role in the caring of patients undergoing surgery to prevent hazards that may occur and maintain patient safety. This beneficial role may not be achieved unless these nurses follow professionalism. This includes; demonstrates punctuality, maintaining good attendance records, adhering to codes and standards of operating room. Nurses should be aware of personal limitations and open to constructive criticism, constantly seeking to improve and maintain positive attitude (Willassen,et al., 2018).
