A FLORISTIC STUDY OF MALVACEAE IN EGYPT

Abstract


1- This work aims to survey the available species of Malvaceae (wild and cultivated) in Egypt.
2- Malvaceae species were detected through twenty five visits were conducted to different habitats during the period from March 2017 to September 2018, in addition to the investigation of the herbarium specimens in the major herbaria in Egypt (CAIM and CAI).
3- There were 257 specimens collected during these visits and prepared as herbarium specimens deposited in CAIM.
4- Through the investigation of 530 herbarium specimens, the vegetation, flowers, fruits and seeds characters were detected and measured. The scientific names of ten herbarium specimens were corrected.
5- The study revealed 49 taxa belong to 14 genera of Malvaceae (wild and cultivated) in four tribes.
6- Descriptions of the studied species were mainly depended on the investigation of the herbarium specimens and fresh materials which collected, in addition to various literatures. Valid names of all taxa with their citations and synonyms were updated.
7- Identification keys for tribes, genera and species are constructed.
8- Four wild species are recorded in the present study not recorded in the previous literature about Malvaceae in the flora of Egypt.
9- There are ten wild species excluded from this study, these species were recorded in the literatures of Egyptian Flora with no certainty or documented herbarium specimens.
10- Eleven taxa were updated with the new accepted names instead of its old scientific names in the previous literatures of Egyptian Flora or the investigated herbarium specimens.
