Comparative Study between Pneumatic and Holmium Laser Lithotripsy in Treatment of Ureteric Stones

Abstract

rolithiasis is a health problem of worldwide importance. The urological treatment of urinary calculi has changed considerably in the past 20 years. Various endourological treatments are available for urinary calculi. Ureteroscopy has undergone a dramatic evolution over the last two decades. The indications for ureteroscopic lithotripsy have increased with smaller semi-rigid ureteroscopes and reliable laser technology and the production of more robust flexible instruments has further expanded the indications for endoscopic intervention. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of holmium laser and pneumatic lithotripters used in the ureteroreoscopic treatment of ureteral stones and investigate their complications. The study aims to compare the efficacy & safety of holmium laser and pneumatic lithotripsy used in the ureteroscopic treatment of ureteral stones. This was a prospective randomized study aiming at the assessment of safety, efficacy and complications of pneumatic Lithotripsy (PL) and laser lithotripsy (LL) with dusting technique (low energy high frequency) was done for the management of urinary tract stones in 200 patients. This was done at The Urology Department, Ain Shams University hospital during the period between September 2019 and February 2020.
