Portal Vein Thrombosis in Neonates with Umbilical Vein Catheterization: Incidence and Risk Factors
Abdullah Ahmed Amin;
Abstract
PVT is a well known complication to UVC insertion in neonates. However, taking precaution while inserting UVC and good monitoring of its proper care and placement is crucial to prevent serious complications like PVT.
This study was conducted to estimate the incidence of PVT in neonates who have UVC insertion. We also studied the risk factors that may lead to PVT post UVC insertion. This included risk factors related to prenatal insults (maternal risk factors), natal insults (birth weight and other risk factors) and postnatal insults (primary cause of NICU admission, neonatal sepsis, UVC related factors like technique of UVC insertion, duration of insertion and other factors).We also studied laboratory abnormalities that may increase development of PVT.
