Phenotypic and Molecular studies on prevalence of (blaIMP) gene metallo beta lactamase in different samples of carbapenem – resistant Acinetobacter

Rasha abd-Elghany Mohamed Mohamed;

Abstract

Acinetobacter is a complex genus, and historically, there has been confusion about the existence of multiple species. The species commonly cause nosocomial infections, predominantly aspiration pneumonia and catheter-associated bacteremia, but can also cause soft tissue and urinary tract infections. Community- acquired infections by Acinetobacter spp. are increasingly reported. Transmission of Acinetobacter and subsequent disease is facilitated by the organism's environmental tenacity, resistance to desiccation, and evasion of host immunity.
Acinetobacter baumanii is rapidly becoming a focus of significant attention, as it is the most frequent among Acientobacter species, responsible for ventilator-associated pneumonia and bloodstream infection which tend to be the most severe. Acinetobacter can also cause, skin and wound infections, urinary tract infection.
Carbapenems are considered important antimicrobial agents for treating infections due to multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp.reports of resistance to these drugs have emerged, with increasing frequency, among Acinetobacter spp. clinical isolates.
