The prevalence of CP increases exponentially in preterm infants with decreasing gestational age. For example, the risk to develop CP is 30 times higher in infants born before 33 weeks gestation compared to term-born infants. Besides prematurity, major risk factors include placental abnormalities, major and minor birth defects, low birth weight, meconium aspiration, emergency caesarean section, birth asphyxia, neonatal seizures, respiratory distress syndrome, hypoglycemia, and neonatal infections
