Role of Interventional Radiology in Gonadal Vein Embolization

Ahmed Mohamed Abouelhoda Darwish;

Abstract

Percutaneous embolization for treatment of the internal spermatic vein is growing to have an important role in the management of varicocle as it is considered to be minimally invasive and done in outpatient basis with has high technical success rates, and very low morbidity and with minimal radiation. It showed clinical results like surgical repair and as or more cost effective. Its minimally invasive technique allows it to be more tolerated with the advantage of shorter recovery time when compared to surgery. Embolization should be offered as an alternative to surgery specially when efficient skilled doctors are available for varicocele treatment.
In conclusion, the use of the embolic agent NBCA for treatment of varicocele is a therapeutic alternative that is safe, effective, inexpensive and simple. NBCA triggers a local inflammatory reaction that promotes thrombosis and sclerosis. The liquid nature of NBCA allows its diffusion through the gonadal vein as well as the collaterals, which appears to decrease the incidence of recurrence as well as improve the results
