Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at the experimental Fann of the Faculty of Agriculture (Saba Basha), Alexandria University, Egypt during 2001 and 2002 seasons to study the effect of some agronomic practices on growth, yield, and its components and grain quality characters of rice (Oryza sativa L).
These agronomic practices were:

(a) two irrigation water sources, i.e. normal and recycling water irrigation.

(b) four levels of nitrogen fertilization (zero, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/fed).

Split-plot design with four replicates was used. Two irrigation water sources were arranged as the main plots, while the four nitrogen fertilization levels were arranged as the sub-plots.
The rice Giza 178 cultivar was used in tllis experiment as it well

known as a moderate resistance to salinity. All otl1er agronomic practices for transplanted rice were followed as recommended.
The results obtained can be summarized as follow:

5.1. Vegetative characters :

1-Number of days to heading increased when the recycling irrigation water forin was used. However, this delay in heading was not sigtlificant. Sigt1ificant increase in no. of days to heading was found with increasing nitrogen levels. This delay was ranged between 9 to 10 days when nitrogen application increased from zero to 120 kg N/fed. in tile two seasons of study. In addition, interaction between different irrigation sources and nitrogen levels was not significant in tile two seasons.
2- Plant height was not affected by different sources of irrigation water usedin this investigation in both seasons.
