ADEQUACY OF VENTILATION DURING GENERAL ANESTHESIA IN SPONTANEOUSLY BREATHING ANESTHETIZED PATIENTS USING A CUFFED OROPHARYNGEAL AIRWAY OR LARYNGEAL MASK AIRWAY

Abstract

Maintenance of a clear airway during general anesthesia using a face mask normally requires support of the lower jaw. Constant attention to the position of the patient's head and of the face mask which makes this technique unpopular for all but the shortest surgical procedures. Pressure injury, to nerves and eyes may also occur. Tracheal intubation rarely causes injury although damage to teeth and soft tissues may occur and postoperative sore throat is common.

Both laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) and Cuffed Oropharyngeal Airway (COPA are non invasive devices that avoid the hazardes of laryngoscopy and intubation. They are less stimulating and the technique of insertion is easier to learn. So effective evaluation of adequacy of ventilation
of these devices is our aim in the study.

This study was carried out on 60 adult patients ASA I, II undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia in which they are breathing spontaneously. Patients included in the study were randomly allocated into
• two equal groups each group contain 30 patients.
Group 1: (LMA)

Laryngeal mask airway was inserted after induction of anesthesia.

Group 2: (COPA)

Cuffed oropharyngeal airway was inserted after induction of anesthesia.

The cuff was inflated with air as necessary to establish an effective

• airway.
