Retrospective survey study and genetic Diagnostic Classification of genetic Diseases of patients in Genetics Clinic Pediatric Department, Menoufiya University.

Abstract

Rapid advances in our knowledge of the structure and function of the human genome help in understanding the influence of genetic factors in human disease and also rapidly transforming the practice of medicine.

The information gained from the human genome project and related genetic research will create significant changes in health care practice. By this information the genetic disorders classified to Gene disorders, Chromosomal disorders, Multifactorial, disorders and Nontraditional inheritance.

Our study aimed to find out the prevalence of various groups of genetic disorders in Genetic Clinic, Pediatric Department, Menoufiya University Hospital and classify them etiological and try to found risk factors.

This study was designed to be retrospective, longitudinal study .It comprised reviewing of the medical records of all patients attended to the Genetics Clinic ,Pediatric department , Menoufiya University Hospital • during a period of 15 years from 1990 - 2005 .

The total number of patients attended to Pediatric Department

Menoufiya University Hospital in the time from 1990 to 2005 years was

322400 patients. From which 12975 cases were classified to have genetic disorders (4.02% of all patients). The medical records for patients which had genetic disorders divide according to periods ofyears into 3 groups.
