Effect of Mitral valve Surgery on left atrial and pulmonary artery pressures

Hosam Fouad Aly Fawzy;

Abstract

Rheumatic mitral valve disease is one of the commonest heart lesions in Egypt and other developed countries.

Mitral stenosis is frequently associated with left atrial hypertension and pulmonary hypertension while mitral incompetence is frequently associated with left atrial hypertension and reduction of systemic blood flow.

Haemodynamic studies have demonstrated reversibility of pulmonary vascular resistance after mitral valve operations.

The aim of this work is to study the immediate effect of mitral valve surgery on the operative left atrial and pulmonary artery pressures.

This study was conducted on 40 patients with isolated rheumatic mitral valve disease, 22 patients had pure mitral stenosis, 9 patients had pure mitral incompetence and 9 patients had both stenosis and incompetence.

These cases were submitted to surgery after taking a full history and clinical examination, followed by the following investigations x-ray for the chest and heart, electrocardiography and echocardiography.
