Gamma Knife Radiosurgery role in the management of brain stem cavernous angiomas.

Ahmed Ragab Abdel Salam;

Abstract

Cavernous angioma or cavernoma is a benign vascular malformation, which can be found at any region within the brain. Brain stem cavernous angioma is rare. The treatment of cavernomas includes three main options: (i) conservative treatment (ii) surgical removal (iii) stereotactic radiosurgery. Although the optimal management of intracranial cavernous angiomas is open resection, Gamma Knife radiosurgery has played an important role in treating these deeply seated and high surgical risk malformations throughout the past 20 years. Radiosurgery is recommended for surgically inaccessible CMs. the aim of stereotactic radisurgery is to reduce hemorrhage rate this effect needs a latency period of 2 years. Another important effect of stereotactic radisurgery on cavernoma is to improve clinical manifestations.
