Evaluation of the Role of Platelet Gel in Promoting Healing of Phalangeal Fractures after Fixation by Kirschner Wires
Asmaa Ahmed Ahmed Al Sabbagh;
Abstract
utologous Platelet gel may become an ideal autologously prepared biologic blood-derived product that can be exogenously applied to a diversity of tissues, in which it releases high concentrations of platelet growth factors that enhance healing. In addition, it possesses antimicrobial properties that may contribute to the prevention of infections. Our study showed that the use of PLG is beneficial in promoting healing of phalangeal fractures after fixation by K- wires.
Phalangeal fractures and its healing give a challenge for plastic surgery. In our study we gave a safe, non-toxic to tissue, autologous, easily prepared, readily available and cost-effective method in promoting healing of phalangeal fractures.
In our study: We had 20 Patients were operated either by general or local anaesthesia in a prospective interventional study for evaluation the role of platelet gel in promoting healing of phalangeal fractures after fixation by K-wires.
In our study: Clinical and radiographic signs of healing at 12-16 weeks were achieved in 100% of studied patients. As they were achieved in 70% of studied patients at 12th week and in 30% of studied patients at 16th week and early improvement of swelling and tenderness. The mean of time of healing was (13.20±1.93) weeks compared to (16.40±2.95) weeks in the control group.
