DIAGNOSTIC TESTS USED FOR THE ESTIMATION OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE ACTIVITY : A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF INTERLEUKIN1β LEVEL IN GINGIVAL TISSUES AND BANA HYDROLYSIS BY PLAQUE
SAHAR MAHMOUD FAWZY GHORABA;
Abstract
The present study was carried out to evaluate the
I sensitivity of diagnostic markers for periodontal disease
activity in rapidly progressive periodontitis.. Clinical parameters (BOP), dark-field microscopy of subgingival plaque and lead acetate test were compared to BANA hydrolysis and
1L- 1level in tissues from sites of active periodontal
I destruction as evidenced by subtraction radiography before
and after periodontal therapy.
I
A total of 45 diseased sites were monitored and selected in
I fifteen patients with rapidly progressive periodontitis. The
!. selected diagnostic tests were carried out at baseline. After the
.l pretreatment measurements, the diseased sites were thoroughly treated by com 2rehensive IJeriodontal therapy and

th e modified W idm an flap pro cedure. The same diagnostic
I tests were carried out two months following treatment to
determine the most sensitive and simple diagnostic marker for
I the detection of periodontal disease activity.
I Results of this study showed the following :
1- BOP, BANA_I:.ydrolysis and 1L-1 level as indicators of

disease• activity gave comparable results for both pre and
I post-treatment sites. However, the sensitivity of these tests
was high preoperatively since, inflammation and bacterial counts were high enough for detection. On the other hand.
