Preparation and Characterization of Modified Nano-Materials for Preconcentration and Determination of Some Elements of Nuclear Interest

Moubarak Abdel-Raheem Sayed Marzouk;

Abstract

The work presented in this thesis dealt with the preconcentration of La(III), Eu(III),Gd(III) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions using sorption onto synthesized modified nanomaterials. Also, the work has concerned with characterization of the prepared nano- sorbents and sorption behavior of the mentioned elements onto these sorbents under various conditions. Finally, it studied the sorption isotherm, kinetics and sorption mechanism as well as the preconcentration studies of La(III), Eu(III),Gd(III) and Pb(II) at low concentrations using the synthesized nanosorbents and their modified composites.
The thesis is divided into three main chapters including: chapter 1, the introduction, chapter 2, experimental and chapter 3, results and discussion.
Chapter-1: Introduction
The introduction included some aspects of the chemistry of rare earth elements and heavy elements with brief account on the chemistry and nuclear interest of the selected elements; lanthanum, europium, gadolinium and lead. It comprehensively outlined the different techniques applied for the preconcentration of REEs and heavy elements from aqueous solutions with focus on the adsorption technique. This part also included the adsorption process definition and its types of chemisorption and physisorption. In addition, it included brief information about the synthesized nanomaterials as sorbents in addition to their modified forms. Finally, the chapter ended with a literature survey on the preconcentration and sorption of La(III), Eu(III), Gd(III) and Pb(II) using different sorbents.
