CHEMISTRY AND TREATMENT OF GROUNDWATER IN EL BAHARIYA OASIS

Abstract

Groundwater in El Bahariya oasis is the only source of drinking and irrigation water. Nowadays, due to the increase• of the population, the groundwater development in the oasis becomes of great necessity, especially because the soil in the area IS suitable for cultivation. For this reason, the hydrochemistry of groundwater in the oasis is studied to detect the quality of water. The main problem affect the development of the groundwater is the higher concentrations of iron and manganese. To overcome this problem, a trail has been made for the possibility of a treatment process of groundwater. To achieve such a process, the preparation of radiation grafting reactive polymer was done. The effect of preparation conditions on the grafting yield is thoroughly investigated. The characterization and -some selected properties of the prepared grafted polymer are studied and accordingly the possibility of its practicable use is determined. Possible application of such prepared reactive polymer in the treatment of iron and manganese from water is investigated.
