Abstract

This study involves the synthesis of f:..P.r- butenolides [5-aryl-3(N-acetyloxindolylidene)-2(3H)-furanones (3a- d)] from the condensation of isatin (1) and P-aroylpro- pionic acids (2) under Perkin conditions. The reactivity of the prepared 2 (3H)- furanone derivatives (3a-d) towards some reagents are studied. 5-Aryl-3-(N-acetyloxindolylidene) -2 (3H)- furano-

nes (3a-d) react with anthranilic acid (4)under different

1 conditions to give the corresponding derivatives.

Reaction of 5-aryl-3 (N-acetyloxindolylidene)-2(3H)- p ) furanone (3d) with anthranilic acid (4)in refluxing acetic • acid yielded (Sd), however, (3a-c) failed to react.

But (3a-c) react with anthranilic acid (4) in absence of solvent to give the corresponding open amide derivatives (Sa-c), via ring opening.
