BENEFITS OF LAPAROSCOPY FOR THE UNDESCENDED TESTES

Abstract


This study was carried out in the department of Urology, Assiut University Hospital from August 2000 to August 200 I .It included 50 patients with undescended testes. Fifteen patients had bilateral undescended and 35 had unilateral undescended testes, 25 testes were on the left side and I 0 were on the right for a total of 65 undescended testes. The mean age of the patients was 16 years ranging from I year to 30 years.
All patients were subjected to history taking, clinical examination both in the supine and squatting positions and routine laboratory investigations. Simple preoperative preparation was done in the form of blood group typing (for possible blood transfusion). All patients were informed about the possible complications and conversion into open surgery. A formal consent was obtained. Enema was done the night before the operation.
Under general anesthesia, the patient was examined again to detect an inguinal or canalicular testis, if not, the abdomen, groin and genitalia were prepared then the patient was placed in Trendlenburg position. A curvilinear 5 mm subumblical incision was made then the Veress needle used for insufflation.
