Abstract


The origmal work is arranged in tow parts.

PART 1: Reaction of 4-methoxy-and4,9-dimethoxy-5-oxo-5H-furo[3,2-g)[l)- benzopyran-6-carboxaldehydes with amines, hydrazines, active methylenes and thioglycollic acid.
This part deals with the synthesis of many heterocyclic compounds with a natural occurring residue. The antimicrobial properties of the newly synthesized compounds were also screened.
The naturally occurring visnagin Ia and khellin Ib upon hydrolysis with aqueous potassium hydroxide afforded the corresponding visnaginone Ila and khellinone IJb. The lattres via Vilsmeier-Haack reaction gave directly the corresponding 5-oxo-SH-
furo[3 ,2-g][ l]benzopyran-6-carboxaldehydes IIIa, b
