Abstract


Shoulder pam is a common and serious problem in hemiplegia, has been reported with an incidence ranging from 5% to 84% in stroke patients.


The aim of this study is evaluation and identification of painful shoulder in chronic hemiplegia in an attempt to correlate the demographic information to the etiology ofthis disorder.


This study comprised thirty patients with chronic hemiplegia (>3 months) secondary to cerebrovascular accident (stroke). All the patients were complaining of pain in the hemiplegic shoulder that started after the onset of stroke. They were 20 males (66.7%) and 10 females (33.3%) whose ages ranged form 35 to 70 years. Twelve patients hadright sided hemiplegia (40%) and eighteen patients had left sided hemiplegia (60%).


All the patients were subjected to full history taking, thorough, clinical examination, radiological examination of both shoulders and cervical spine and laboratory investigations when required.
