Nursing Competency for Caring of High-Risk Neonates at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Abdelaziz Said Abdelaziz Hendy;

Abstract

igh Risk Neonate is defined as a neonate, regardless of GA
or birth weight, who has a greater chance of morbidity or
mortality, especially within the first 28 days of life. HRN is a
neonate exposed to any condition that make the survival rate of
the neonate at danger. HRN is considered as a neonate who
needs a special medical and nursing attention to survive
(Denne, 2018).
Providing respiratory support in the HRNs is a significant
component of the care delivered in the neonatal unit. Many of
the HRNs admitted to neonatal care require some degree of
mechanical ventilation. Many different ventilation modes and
ventilation strategies are available to assist with the
optimization of mechanical ventilation and prevention of
ventilator-induced lung injury (Sinha & Donn, 2017).
Nursing competency has been defined as “the
knowledge, skills, ability and behaviors that a nurse possesses
in order to perform tasks correctly and skillfully. Competency
focuses on a neonatal nurse’s ability to perform activities
related to care, nursing skills, or learning. It describes actions or
skills that nurses must be able to demonstrate (Mirlashari et al.,
2016).
