Engineering Geological Map of Northern Sinai Peninsula

Samir Abdeltawab Elsayed; A. Hussein;

Abstract

Several engineering projects have been started in the northern part of Sinai Peninsula during the last two decades. These construction activities need to be supported with sets of data base represented by geological, topographical, engineering geological and land- use maps. These types of maps help the planner in selecting the suitable site, optimum design and most economic type of projects. The engineering geological and land use maps of the study area represent an example of data base that can help for defining the factors controlling the development activities and constraints in the northern Sinai Peninsula. The area is covered by four problematic geo-engineering units which include soft plastic clays of Sahl Al Tina, Sabkhas (around the lakes and along the coastal line), playas in the central part and active sand dunes. The geological and engineering characteristics of these mapped units were determined and expressed by an engineering geological map covering the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.
