Abstract
The Concept of αγαθός in the Lyric Poetry
(Tyrtaeus, Solon, Theognis, Pindarus)
This research discusses the term αγαθός, its synonyms and its opposites in the works of the lyric poets (7th-5th Cent. B.C.), especially Tyrtaeus, Solon, Theognis, Pindarus.
Tyrtaeus in the seventh century, under the stress of the Messenian war, finds it necessary, faced with the complex Homeric virtue (αρετ), to emphasize one aspect of it at the expense of the rest. He rejects all the familiar aristocratic excellences of athletic skill, birth, wealth, beauty, which are inferior to "αλκ", the virtue of the citizen in defense of the city. The αγαθός is the warrior who dies honorably in battle confers glory by his actions on his family and country. His tomb and offspring are distinguished among men, and he himself wins enduring fame. In Tyrtaeus, αγαθός must be αγαθός in war, this is virtue (αρετ).
In Solon-Theognis age (the six century), had occurred one other change of the greatest importance: the invention of coined money. Most important here is the fact that it may be earned in many ways, including means such as commerce which the old αγαθο may be unable or unwilling to employ. Therefore many κακο are rich and many αγαθοare poor. They honor wealth, the αγαθόςhas married from the house of κακός, the κακός from the household of αγαθός. Wealth has thrown lineage into confusion. Therefore both of Solon and Theognis define the αγαθός that the man who can't take wealth exchange for his αρετ (nobility). The αγαθός of Solon-Theognis age is the man who follow, in his behaviors, justice, wisdom, good opinion as co-operative values which benefit the society.
The αγαθός-in Pindarus (fifth century)- is the strong athlete who participates in the Olympian and Pythian contests. The αγαθόςof Pindarus shows traditional competitive-excellences as bravery, but also he must introduce co-operative values: the liberal expenditure of the games, hospitality, breeder of horses, to win a good name.
