Recycling of Heterogeneous Fill into Geotechnically-Stable Soils

Ahmed H. Abdel-Rahman; Ahmed, Sayed;

Abstract

The concept of material recycling has been growing among civil engineers for the purpose of material conservation and environmental protection. This paper presents a case history where the recycling concept was successfully applied during the construction of a major park in Al-Azhar area near downtown Cairo. The site is about 80 hectares formed of 15m to 40m height of historic fill formed since the Islamic civilization in Cairo. That fill was recycled to different types of liners used to avoid infiltration of water to deep-seated fill layers, and also different types of structural materials used for road construction. Application of the recycling concept had a major positive economic impact on the project and also saved the environment from disposing away of a huge amount of excavated materials
