EIGHT RECEIPTS FROM ELEPHANTINE CONCERNING TAXES ON DATE-PALM GROVES

Abstract

The eight Greek ostraca published here are kept in the Egyptian Museum at Cairo under the register number 18955. All of them come from Elephantine and are dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries. The texts are receipts concerning date-palms. Five receipts are for the survey tax on palm groves, γεωμετρία φοινικῶνος (1, 2, 5, 7, 8), one receipt is for the value of public dates, τιμὴ δημοσίου φοίνικος (3), one receipt is for both γεωμετρία φοινικῶνος and τιμὴ δημοσίου φοίνικος (4), and one is for the revenue (income) of palm groves, πρόσοδος φοινικῶνος (6)
