Abstract
The Linguistic Indicators of Argumentative Discourse in the Iliad: (The Assembly of the Greek Army, Il.,1.53-305 as a Sample)
Achilles is acknowledged to be the greatest warrior at Troy, but his language is certainly not the ―brilliant orator he far more often succeeds in persuading Homer’s audience that he is what he says he is and means what he says. Achilles is an effective speaker, and his speech is memorable, but he nevertheless fails to convince his fellow warriors. Achilles and Agamemnon are vying for control and the latter’s insecurity and the former’s impetuosity make their speeches equally unproductive. Achilles’ speech is notable for its rashness, just as Agamemnon’s speech and actions are thoughtlessly precipitous. The first words of Achilles to Agamemnon address the king as ―the greediest of all men (φιλοκτεανώτατε πάντων, 1.122).
The researcher tries, through this paper, to define what is "Argumentative Discourse"? And what are the Indicators of Argumentative Discourse? And is it possible through the Argumentative indicators to reveal the stylistics of the poet Homer that he used to convince his audience of the positions taken by his heroes in the Iliad?
Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Argumentative Discourse, Language of Persuasion, Ancient Greek, Language of Conflict, Achilles, Iliad, Homer, Agamemnon, Calchas, Nestor.
