Abstract

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease involving many complex risk and protective factors, leading to the imbalance between the demineralization and remineralization processes and this lead to the formation of carious lesions in both the primary and permanent dentitions 1 .
Among all tooth surfaces, 12.5% are occlusal, but these account for two-thirds of total caries in children. Pits and fissures are eight times as vulnerable as the smooth surface to caries. Pit and fissure caries accounts for about 90% of caries in permanent posterior teeth and 44% of caries in the primary teeth in children and adolescent 2.
In primary and permanent teeth, the fissure region of the occlusal surface of the molars is the most susceptible caries site, because of the specific anatomy and the inability to adequately remove plaque from those teeth 3.
