Serum Calprotectin as a Potentially Sensitive Biomarker for Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Egyptian Patients
Nehal Said Mohamed Azab;
Abstract
nflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (UC and CD) are chronic inflammatory diseases of unknown etiology with periods of remission and exacerbations. It is believed that it is a multifactorial disease; environmental, genetic and immunologic factors have been considered as the major factors in genetically susceptible individuals.
Although colonoscopy is the gold standard for initial diagnosis, it is invasive, and expensive method. Role of serum markers is still unclear. Also fecal markers have a low acceptance rate in spite of being non-invasive. So, a need exists for non-invasive accepted and accurate blood-based biomarker
