PREVENTION OF POSTERIOR CAPSULAR OPACIFICATION AFTER EXTRA-CAPSULAR CATARCT EXTRACTION

Haten Aly Mohamed EI-Labban;

Abstract

The present thesis investigates the prevention of posterior capsular
opacification (PCO) after extracapsular cataract extraction operations

(ECCE) by using the antimitotic drug mitomycin-C. As PCO is due
mainly to proliferation and fibrous metaplasia of the remnants of lens
epithelium, the antimitotic drug, mitomycin-C, is used for its
antiproliferative and anti-fibrotic action. The study also investigates the
side effects of the drug when used locally on ocular tissues. It is an
experimental study done on young rabbits
