INFLUENCE OF AZADIRACHTIN AND ITS ANALOGUES ON SOME ORGANS AND TISSUES OF THE ADULT FRESH WATER

Abstract

This study was designed to investigate some haematological, physiological and histopathological effects in response to the application of products from leaves and fruits of chinaberry plant, Melia azedarach, on the freshwater catfish, Clarias lazera.

Behavioural responses can be briefly reviewed as signs of gradual tiredness, inactivity and extreme sluggishness giving a clear evidence of stress response.

Minor mortality cases have been recorded, throughout the whole experimental period, which may indicate that the drug concentration, duration of exposure or the route of administration were insufficient to induce considerable mortality levels. This observation might also due to an adaptation response of this animal to that sort of stress.

Under the influence of the application of chinaberry derivatives, a slight decrease in body weight was observed, specially, in fish fed on aqueous leaf suspension. This is interpreted on the basis of the loss of appetite and loss of condition.
Clarias lazera exhibited a remarkable decrease in red blood cell count, haemoglobin content and haematocrit value after the administration of
