Passive House Standards for Achieving Energy-efficient Office Buildings in Egypt

Yomna Aref Abdelraouf Abdelhalim;

Abstract

This chapter discussed detailed simulation-based analysis for energy performance of three case studies using PH standards and principles. Three analyzed case studies are office buildings located in Cairo, Egypt. As well, in this chapter, building base-case and new building design case with PH standards were compared and analyzed in the three case studies. And finally, this chapter focused on final results using e-QUEST simulation software after analyzing collected data and it showed significant reduction in energy use in the three office buildings and showed that the initial cost has increased by 30% in first building and this cost will compensate through 5 years with the rate of ROI of 42%, while it has increased by 38% in second building and it will compensate through 7 years with the rate of ROI of 61%, and it has increased by 47% in third building and it will compensate through 8 years with the rate of ROI of 88%, which is not successful for the investment through 8 years. The taller the building is, the higher construction costs will be saved slower, as in new planned office tower, while the shorter building will save the costs faster, as in CFC office building. Therefore, PH standards is viable in Egypt for mid-rise buildings with A/V ratio ranging between (0.30 - 0.70) m-1.
