Electrochemical Chloride Extraction from Reinforced Concrete Using Locally Available Materials and Techniques

Nourhan ELsayed Mohamad Ramdan Ali;

Abstract

Corrosion of reinforcing steel is considered one of the major causes of reinforced concrete deterioration. Chloride ions in reinforced concrete are considered one of the most important causes of such deterioration as a result of steel rebar decomposition and bond loss between concrete and steel rebar. There are different methods used to extract chloride ions from concrete. Among these methods, the electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) technique is considered one of the most efficient and superior techniques recommended by different researchers. Most of the research work done in this field showed a good efficiency of ECE as a technique used to extract chloride ions from concrete. But there are still open questions about the increase in concrete permeability, a decrease of concrete compressive, bond strengths and decrease in steel ductility caused by the ECE technique.
