Total Knee Arthroplasty vs Uni Compartment Knee Arthroplasty in Management of Anteromedial Knee Osteoarthritis

Ahmed Abd El Samad Abd Rabo Alkersh;

Abstract

SUMMARY
• Both UKA and TKA are good options in treatment of isolated anteromedial knee osteoarthritis.
• ACL deficiency and central large lateral compartement ulcer are contraindications for UKA and operation should be shifted to TKA.
• Never to prepare a uni case without a total knee backup set is present.
• Intraoperative assessment for ACL and lateral compartment is a must before proceeding by a UKA.
• Clinical and radiographic assessment is not enough to take the decision and proceeding for UKA.
• Although UKA can reserve the bone stock of the knee joint and keep the native knee joint mechanics; the long term functional outcome and complication rate are the same after both UKA and TKA in this study population.
• UKA has a better early functional outcome but this study couldn’t predict the durability of UKA.
• As regard postoperative complications there is no a significant difference between UKA and TKA.
• UKA needs more studies to know its durability.
