Effect of Hemodialysis Long Life Program on the Quality of Life of Patients with End Stage Renal Disease

Abstract

Background: Long term hemodialysis (Chronic dialysis) has a great impact on the patients’ health-related quality of life, as it affects physical, social, psychological and spiritual well-being of patients and often leading to post-dialysis fatigue, generalized weakness, restless leg syndrome, anxiety and depression. Aim: This study aimed to assess effect of hemodialysis long life program on quality of life for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Design: Descriptive exploratory design was utilized in carrying out this study. Setting: The study was conducted in hemodialysis unit at Urology and Nephrology center affiliated to Mansoura University. Subjects: A Purposive sample of (60) patients who were diagnosed with end stage renal diseases (ESRD), on long life hemodialysis (HD) and met the inclusion criteria. Tools: I- Patient’s interviewing questionnaire II- quality of life scale. Results: 45% of the studied patients were at age group between 20-<40 years old and 55% of them were males. There were positive statistically significant correlation between physical and social, physical and psychological, social and psychological dimension scale.Conclusion: More than half of the studied patients had average level of phsical quality of life, three quarters of them had average social and psychological level of quality of life. While, all of them had good quality of life in spiritual dimension scale. Recommendation: Further research studies are needed to focus on studying factors affecting QOL for patients with ESRD on long HD program and replication of the study on other areas for more generalization.
