EFFECT OF NITROGEN SOURCES AND BIOFERTILIZER ON MAIZE PLANT IN CALCAREOUS SOILS

HANY ABD EL-ATI ABD EI-RAHMAN DARWESH;

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out in the newly reclaimed land of North West Egypt, in Nubaria area which located at 46 km South West Alexandria, Egypt for the two seasons of 1999 and 2000 to investigate the effect of nitrogen sources and biofertilizers on growth, yield and its components of maize (Zea mays, L.).

The experimental design in the two seasons was a split-plot with four replications. The main plots were occupied by three nitrogen sources (control, urea [46.5% N], ammonium sulphate [20.6% N] and calcium nitrate [15.5% N]) in the addition to the control treatment. The biofertilization forms of (non-inoculation, Microbin, Nitrobin and Rizobacterin) were arranged at random within the sub-plots. Maize cultivar single cross 10 (S.C. 10) was planted in both seasons. The recommended cultural practices for Alexandria region were also perfonned as usual.

The studied characters in the present investigation were plant height, ear height, stem diameter, leaf area index, days to 50% of silking, ear length, ear diameter, cobe diameter, number of ears per plant, number of rows per ear, number of kernels per row, number of kernels per ear,
100-kernel weight, grain yield per plot, grain yield per hectare and crude protein percentage in grains.
