Role and Correlation of High Resolution Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Evaluation of Shoulder Pain in the Elderly

Abstract

SUMMARY
Shoulder disorders are a common and sometimes underestimated cause of pain and disability in elderly people. Soft tissue lesions are the most common cause of shoulder pain in the elderly, including rotator cuff tendinitis or rupture, sub acromial impingement, frozen shoulder and acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints osteoarthritis.
Clinical examination alone has a limited value in deciding on the management options for the underlying etiology.
Diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography and MRI are comparable. ultrasonography and MR imaging can be used as primary modality for evaluating the shoulder disorders, because they have comparable degrees of accuracy. Modality choice should be based on several factors like availability, patient preference and clinical information being sought.
A well performed ultrasound examination in most cases obviates the need for more invasive diagnostic tests like arthrography and cumbersome and expensive MRI examinations.
This cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2021 and September 2021 at Ain shams university hospital on a total of 22 elderly patients were presented with acute shoulder joint pain. The male to female percentage was 1:1.
