The Association Between Trace Elements And Depression Among Elderly Patients With Chronic Liver Disease

Maram Magdy Maamoun Shaat;

Abstract

CLD causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, so it is an important public health issue globally.
Depression is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder among older people, and it has a significant impact on the QOL.
Patients with CLD have a higher incidence of depression than that in healthy population, it may be due to accumulation of neurotoxic in blood and the accumulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the brain.
The human body is composed of elements that is divided into macro-minerals and TEs. The liver regulates the transport, excretion of macro-minerals and TEs through bile formation.
The concentration of each macro-mineral and TE differs with different types of CLD since these elements may have a direct hepatic toxicity or may be decreased as a result of liver function impairment.
Macro-minerals and TEs levels are linked with the etiology and pathophysiology of many mental disorders, including depression.
