Abstract

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of garlic (Allium sativum) on blood lipid profile, blood glucose and nitric oxide levels in streptozotocin (40 mg/kg body weight) induced diabetic rats.

Sixty male albino rats were used divided into 4 equal groups. Induction of diabetes was done to 30 rats (2 groups), then garlic was administered in a daily oral dose of (100 mg/kg body weight) for 16 weeks to 15 non-diabetic and 15 diabetic rats.
Supplementation of garlic in the same dose to non-diabetic rats have produced no significant differences as regards any of the parameters including glucose, lipid profile and nitric oxide levels when compared with the control group.
The diabetic induced rats showed the expected significant elevation in serum glucose, LDL, triglyceride, and cholesterol. Concomitantly a significant decrease in HDL were detected when compared with their corresponding values of controls. Also nitric oxide levels showed to be significantly higher in diabetic rats. However, supplementation of garlic to the diabetic induced rats have been shown to produce a significant decrease in serum glucose cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and nitric oxide levels, while elevating HDL levels.
