OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE SYMPTOMS IN PATIENTS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract


The aim of the work of this study was to assess the prevalence of
Obsessive Compulsive Symptoms (0CS) among schizophrenic patients
and to compare between schizophrenic patients with and without 0CS as regard the presentation and the severity of their illness, the study was carried oat on 200 schizophrenic patients selected randomly from the outpatient psychiatric clinic of the main University Hospital and the psychiatry inpatient ward of El-Haddara University Hospital in the period
from 1 /1/2001 t0 1 /6/2001.
· Schizophrenic patients participated in this study were diagnosed as having schizophrenia according to the DSM-IV criteria and revised by two staff members of the department of psychiatry; Faculty of Medicine; Alexandria University.
The 200 schizophrenic patients in this study were divided according to the presence or absence of 0CS into two groups; group I, schizophrenic patients without OCS (n. = 161, 80.5%), group II schizophrenic patients with OCS (n. =39, 19.5%), out of the 200 schizophrenic patients 1II patients were males (55.5%), 89 were females (44.5%).
