Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequently observed cause of treatable infertility. It is commonly encountered among young women and accounts for nearly 70% of cases involving anovulatory infertility. Aim of the Work: to examine the effect of the body mass index (BMI) and age on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) infertile patients undergoing intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment. Patienst and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using existing data on 600 ICSI treatment cycles undergone by PCOS women in the assisted reproductive unit in Ain Shams University Maternity hospital. BMI (kg/m2) and age was analyzed as a continuous and categorical (< 25, 25−29.9 ≥ 30) (20-35, 36-40) variables respectively. Results: BMI and age appear to have significant and distinct effects on the results of PCOS patients undergoing ICSI, as the pregnancy tests results were positive in 61% in the lowest BMI group (18.5-24.9) whereas they were positive in only 32% in the highest BMI group (30-34.9) and regarding the age groups, pregnancy tests results were positive 54% in the lower age group (20-35) compared to 41.3% in the older age group (36-40). Also Rotterdam’s criteria were fulfilled by all the patients in the study. Results indicated that BMI and age was inversely associated with the number of mature oocytes retrieved, successful fertilization of those oocytes, number of embryos and pregnancy test results as well. Conclusion: BMI was found to be affecting the outcome of ICSI in PCOS patients regarding no. of eggs retrieved, successful fertilization, no. of embryos and pregnancy test as well. The relationship between BMI groups and outcome was found to be an inversely proportional relationship. Age also was found to have an inversely proportional relationship between the age groups tested and the outcome of their ICSI process regarding no. of eggs retrieved, successful fertilization, no. of embryos and pregnancy test.
