Autotransfusion and Anesthesia

Khaled Farouk Azab;

Abstract

Summary
Blood transfusion in any branch of medicine may be life saving. Firstly, the physiological aspects and physico-chemical properties of the blood must be well known to the anesthesiologist and he must have a good idea about blood grouping and when the blood transfusion is considered necessary.

The complications of homologous blood transfusion include acute transfusion reactions, viral disease transmission as hepatitis B and C and HIV infections, and also bacterial and parasitic infections.
In many hospitals autologous blood transfusion is used as a safe and affordable alternative to traditional use of homologous blood.
There are different types of autologous transfusion which include: predeposit donation, acute nonnovolemic hemodilution, intraoperative cell salvage, and postoperative collection.
These different types of autologous blood transfusion can be used in obstetrics, gynecology, orthotopic liver transplantation, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, pediatric surgery, and orthopedic surgery.
