Role of Comprehensive Magnetic Resonance Imaging in diagnosis of Epilepsy in Children

Elham Abd-Elsalam Ahmed;

Abstract

pilepsy is acondition characterized by recurrent (two or more) epileptic seizures which are unprovoked by any immediate identifiable cause. Regarding its etiology, it may be of known cause or cryptogenic (presumed to be symptomatic, but the etiology is not known).
Our patients were subjected to full history taking, full clinical examination and imaging studies by MRI using a 1.5 tesla MRI device.
Magnetic resonance imaging has many advantages including the use of non-ionized radiation, high sensitivity and higher specificity than CT scan, multiplanner imaging capability, improved contrast of soft tissue and high anatomic resolution, Diffuse pulse sequences were used in our study including T1W1, T2W1, FLAIR, Axial DWI, Axial T2 thin cut, Axial T2, Axial T2*, Axial, Coronal. Oblique T1, T2 and FLAIR and 3DT1WI.

In conclusion:

1- Brain MRI is recommended for every children with epilepsy.
2- MRI is the method of examination of choice in childhood epilepsy as it has many advantages including the use of non-ionizing radiation, high sensitivity and higher specificity than CT scan, multiplanar imaging capability, improved contrast of soft tissue.
