STUDY OF BACTERIAL INFECTION AND SERUM INTERLEUKIN 8 (IL-8) IN ADULT PATIENTS WITH HAEMATOLOGICAL MALIGNANCIES
Ola Abd El -Fattah Ibrahim El - Shora;
Abstract
Bacterial infection is a severe and patiently fatal complication of haematological malignancies. Careful diagnosis and treatment results in successful resolution of infection in most cases.
This work aimed to identify the type of bacteria that caused infection in patients with haematological malignancies and to analyize
the serum level of IL-8 to find out the possibility of its' utilization for
,•
predication of bacteremia and infection in such patients, to be taken in
consideration in prophylaction approaches, treatment and infection control program.
Fifty febrile patients with haematological malignancies were included in this study as (Group I). Their age ranged from 20 to 70 years.
' They were subdivided into six subgroups according to the type of haematological malignancy:
• Group Ia: Ten patients with Acute myeloid leukemia.
• Groupib: Ten patients with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
• Group Ic: Ten patients with Chronic myeloid leukemia.
• Group Id: Ten patients with Chronic lymphoblastic leukemia.
•. • Group Ie: Five patients with Hodgkin lymphoma.
• Group Ig: Five patients with Non Hodgkin lymphoma.
Ten patients with haematological malignancies with negative culture were taken as non febrile control group (Group II).
