INTERACTION BETWEEN LOCAL AND OVERALL BUCKLING
KHALED MOHEY EL-DIN ESSA ABD ELGHAFAR;
Abstract
The main aim of this research is to study the interaction between local and overall buckling of members having open thin-walled sections. These sections are such as I-section and lipped channel section.
The effective width method is used to model the effect of local buckling. This was taken as proposed by the Egyptian code of practice, the British code of practice and the Swedish code of practice. In the present study a computer program in FORTRAN language is constructed to calculate the effective properties of general open thin-walled sections as stated by the above mentioned codes. A comparison between the effect of local buckling mode as given by these codes is given for several open thin walled sections where the results are compared and analyzed.
An existing computer program in Fortran language developed by Nemir (1985) is modified to predict the interactive buckling (interaction between local and overall buckling) load taking the effect of local buckling into consideration. Beams with different end conditions and different cases ofloading are studied to investigate the critical buckling mode. A comparison is made between the present results and those in the literature to validate the accuracy of the present approach.
