Oncological Safety of Lipofilling in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Meta-analysis

Hebatullah Yasser Badr Mahmoud;

Abstract

n Egypt and according to the National Cancer Registry Program (NCRP), breast cancer is the second most cancer in both sexes (15.4 %) after liver cancers (23.8%) and the most common cancer in females (32%) with incidence crude rate estimated as 35.8 case per 100,000 females in 2011.
Mastectomies became one of the main surgical procedures in which it has been estimated that about 28 – 60 % of women that diagnosed as breast cancer underwent mastectomy operations.
In this systematic review and metanalysis we aimed to estimate the pooled risk of recurrence of using lipofilling in a defect treatment and cosmetic volume enhancement procedure in breast reconstruction for women who underwent mastectomy or BCS operations.
After reviewing 5 comparative studies and 4 non-comparative studies we found that using fat injection as part of the reconstructive surgery after either mastectomy ot lumpectomy is of low risk or may result no difference in the rate of overall recurrence rate with an equally insignificant rate of complication, seroma, infection, oil cyst, fat necrosis and hematoma.
Also, this technique may present a better quality of life and aesthetic outcome according to the reviewed studies.
